AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness program offered throughout Volusia County Schools, that gives students the opportunity to focus on their future success. AVID students are in the program all 4 years of high school, as each year focuses on a different goal. Throughout the 4 years students will learn note taking skills, study strategies, public speaking, dealing with personal research on which career they are interested in and which school they will attend. AVID students are expected to take a higher course load (Honors, Pre-AICE/Cambridge, and Dual Enrollment courses). Due to this higher course load, students have tutorial days to collaborate and understand difficult content in their courses. AVID students also get the oppourtunity to go on college campus tour field studies, mulitple times throughout the school year.
The ideal candidate for the AVID program are students who have post-secondary goals, the desire to become career ready, the willingness to work hard and have the ability to complete rigourous course work, but are in need of extra support to thrive in accelerated classes. Students who apply should demonstrate academic, leadership and personal excellance, have a 2.5 GPA or higher, have average test scores on their standardized testing (3+ on FSA/EOC's), good attendance, good behavior, and work well with others.
You and your AVID classmates will generally be togehter all 4 years of high school, and will build a strong bond over time so it is expected to work collaboratively with your peers. We are excited to welcome you to our AVID family!
